Sunway University recently hosted the landmark “AI for Sustainability: Bridging Innovation, Impact & Inclusion” forum, held in conjunction with the formal launch of the University’s new School of Computing and Artificial Intelligence. The event was honoured by the officiation of YB Tuan Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital, who presided over the ceremony and delivered keynote remarks emphasising Malaysia’s commitment to inclusive AI and sustainable innovation.

The forum brought together thought leaders from academia, industry, government and civil society to explore how artificial intelligence can drive sustainable development across economic, social and environmental dimensions. Discussions centred on how AI can accelerate Malaysia’s transition toward a more inclusive, low-carbon, and knowledge-driven economy, ensuring technology remains a catalyst for both progress and equity.

YB Gobind Singh remarked: “AI is shaping the way we work, study, and live — and it is vital to discuss how such technology can be harnessed responsibly for sustainability. Empowering our local talents is also essential in contributing to the objectives of Malaysia Digital (MD) and the broader vision of Malaysia MADANI. I’m delighted that Sunway University has launched the School of Computing and Artificial Intelligence, reflecting the University’s strong commitment to align higher education with Malaysia’s national digital, talent development, and sustainability agendas.”

The launch of Sunway University’s School of Computing and Artificial Intelligence marks a major milestone in advancing education and research in next-generation technologies. It offers a dynamic portfolio of undergraduate programmes, including Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Networking and Security, Software Engineering, and Data Analytics. In addition to a strong academic foundation, the School provides globally recognised professional certifications across all disciplines, ensuring students are equipped with credentials that hold value worldwide. Sunway University has recently welcomed its first cohort of 18 students, marking the beginning of an exciting journey towards shaping the next generation of computing and AI professionals.
