A 17-year-old student in Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur, suffered severe spinal and spinal cord injuries after being struck by a fallen tree.

The incident occurred on 6 October while the victim was walking with her friends to a tuition class during a storm. As seen in a viral video, strong winds swept through the area moments before the tree fell. According to the victim’s mother, while her daughter’s friends tripped over the branches, her daughter was pinned to the ground and unable to get up.

Bystanders rushed to help and called an ambulance. The victim was immediately taken to the hospital.

Emergency surgery was performed to decompress the spinal cord and stabilise the spine. On 8 October, her tibia and fibula were repaired using interlocking nails.

The mother shared that when her daughter regained consciousness, she said she couldn’t feel her lower body. She added that both her daughter and her friends are still traumatised by the incident and require psychological support.

“As a mother, I felt helpless seeing what my daughter was going through.”

“I hope the relevant authorities take this matter seriously, especially now during the monsoon season, when strong winds and heavy rains are frequent, increasing the risk of falling trees.”

She added that, as a representative of the people, she would assist the family in consulting Kuala Lumpur City Hall to explore further support options.
