Recently, images from a local dog pound, allegedly the one run by the Kuala Langat Municipal Council, had gone viral as the dogs could be seen looking lifeless and skinny while cramped into cages.

The sight of the poor dogs broke the hearts of many, including the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin.

Taking to the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page, she has ordered the authorities, especially the municipal councils in the State of Selangor to improve and upgrade their management procedures at their stray confinement centers.

Queen 1

The statement read, “Her Majesty expressed sadness and disappointment following the viral pictures and videos of stray dogs being neglected at a dog pound in the state of Selangor.”

“As the Royal Patron of the Stray Free Selangor (SFS) campaign run by the Selangor SPCA, Her Majesty wants the local authorities (PBT) to re-examine a new, more holistic approach in managing these abandoned animal confinement centers.”

Queen 2

Her Majesty also shared several efforts the local authorities can utilise towards preserving the welfare and reducing the number of stray and abandoned animals, with the Create Caring and Compassionate Communities (CCC) campaign.

Queen 3

Here are Her Majesty’s suggestions:

  • Strengthen collaboration and cooperation between the municipal councils and the residents of the housing estates involved.
  • The municipal council in collaboration with the SPCA can conduct Responsible Pet Ownership (RPO) sessions with the residents.
  • Prepare a schedule of periodic visits by the SPCA and NGOs to the confinement centers of abandoned (and stray) animals.
  • Placing animal welfare officers with animal lovers in each district zone, further training them to promote the spaying (neutering) of abandoned animals under the SFS campaign.
  • Obtaining advisory and monitoring services from the SPCA and NGOs if there is a need to dispose of these abandoned animals for health reasons or so forth.

Queen 4

“Her Majesty hopes that the efforts to take care of the welfare of these abandoned animals will continue and not just be disregarded later,”

“In addition to the responsibilities that must be carried out by the authorities, Her Majesty also wants every member of the community to play a more significant role, especially in fostering feelings of love for animals and concern for the surrounding conditions,” the statement added.

It’s so refreshing to see how much our Royal families care for the strays and animals in our country.

Thank you, Your Majesty, for doing something about this injustice.
