Malaysia has once again captured the global spotlight, with Penang officially named as the only destination in Southeast Asia to be featured in National Geographic’s prestigious list of the 20 best global travel destinations to visit in 2027.
The ranking highlights Penang’s unique balance of cultural heritage and growing low-impact tourism experiences across both the island and mainland.

What National Geographic loves about Penang
National Geographic reported that Penang derives much of its unique character from the dynamic interplay between Penang Island and the mainland of Seberang Perai.
The publication highlighted several standout experiences awaiting travelers in 2027:
-
The upcoming Penang Hill cable car: Slated to open in 2027, the new cable car system will whisk visitors from the lush Penang Botanic Gardens to the summit in under 10 minutes, offering panoramic views of the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve.
-
Heritage stays: Luxury and history intertwine at the upcoming Soori Penang hotel, which reimagines 15 meticulously restored 20th-century Chinese clan shophouses complete with hand-carved stone lions and open-air light wells.
-
Eco-adventures on the mainland: Visitors can experience low-impact tourism along the Sungai Juru river via the Penang River Cruise, participating in mangrove conservation, crab trapping, and traditional fishing activities.

Cementing Penang’s status on the world stage
Penang State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee Chairman Wong Hon Wai shared that this international accolade reflects the state’s unique and diverse offerings, spanning historical heritage to pristine natural landscapes when contacted by Utusan Malaysia.
“Penang is proud to be selected for this prestigious annual list, providing inspiration and a strong reason for travelers to continue exploring the world, including Penang, next year,” he said.
Hon Wai noted that Penang’s inclusion followed a thorough nomination, research, and reporting process conducted by international travel experts and the National Geographic Traveler editorial team.
This latest recognition further cements Penang’s global reputation, following its previous feature by the publication in 2025 celebrating its world-class food culture.
“This international recognition further strengthens Penang’s appeal as a global tourism destination. It reflects the state’s uniqueness and the experiences that continue to draw visitors from all over the world,” Hon Wai added.
With thrilling new attractions like the upcoming cable car and sustainable river cruises rolling out, there has never been a better time to explore the Pearl of the Orient!
