The Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) believes that the United States (US) President Donald Trump received an overly enthusiastic welcome from Malaysia, which, to PAS, does not reflect a good stand, especially for the victims of war in Palestine.

The overly warm welcome to Trump is like rubbing salt into the wounds of the still-bleeding residents of Gaza.

Malaysia should be firm in its stance against inhumanity

PAS General-Secretary, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, said that the reception also challenges the sensitivity of the free world to the ongoing humanitarian disaster, which should not shape the future interactions with the US. Takiyuddin said that the Government should have reiterated Malaysia’s firm stance against invasion and atrocities, and continue to put the current humanitarian tragedy on the high agenda during talks with the US.

“Any negotiations or trade agreements between Malaysia and the US must be based on the principles of fairness and mutual respect.”

“Bilateral relations between any countries should follow this principle and ensure that both sides obtain equal economic benefits, rather than one party dominating economically.”

Takiyuddin also pointed out that Malaysia’s relations with major powers in the world must bring tangible benefits to the people and the country through trade, investment, and technology transfer while maintaining transparency, dignity, and safeguarding national interests.

“Malaysia should stand and be recognised on the international stage not only as a developing, competitive, democratic and dignified nation, but also as a moral voice for the Islamic world, and firmly defending sovereignty, justice, human rights and freedoms,” he said in the statement.

During his visit, Trump signed the Peace Treaty between Cambodia and Thailand, putting an end to the crisis that had erupted since July this year. Trump’s trip here was rather short, as he had left the country this morning (27 October) for Japan, before flying to South Korea and eventually returning to the US.
