A Malaysian woman recently moved the hearts of netizens with a touching social media post in which she shared her family’s heartbreak upon discovering that their neighbour, whom they had grown close to, was moving away.

Taking to the N9 RADAR Facebook page, the woman, Kak Umie, shared how her family, including her son, Rayden, had become close to their neighbour, Ah Meng.

Move 1

The close relationship between two neighbours of different ethnicities

She wrote, “We’ve been neighbours for a long time, and Ah Meng has done so much for our family. In terms of cars, if we have any problems, we’ll ask him to check them first. He used to be a mechanic and is always there when we need help with anything.

He wouldn’t even take a cent in payment. Instead, my husband and I would treat him to meals.”

“Rayden also loves him very much, and whenever he sees him, he’ll call him ‘Atok (Grandpa)‘ and ask to be carried. Every Chinese New Year, he gets a box of limes and red packets for me. Since Rayden came along, he gives pampers, wet tissues and baby essentials. He’ll say, ‘give them to my grandson‘.”

Unfortunately, the happy times have come to an end

Kak Umie suddenly heard the sounds of a large lorry on their street. It was then that she found out that Ah Meng was moving away.

“I was shocked when my husband told me that Ah Meng was moving. I rushed to his house and asked myself, ‘Is this true, Meng?‘ He answered in a sad tone, ‘Yes, I’m moving to Seremban.‘ Without realising it, my eyes filled with tears. This is because I know we are losing a very good neighbour despite us being of different races and religions.”

In that moment, she remembered all the small things Ah Meng did for their family that had become a routine, including how he would open and close her house gate for her when she would drive in and out.

“A simple kindness, but it means a lot. We will always remember Ah Meng’s gestures. May he continue to become successful in his Mee Celup business,” she ended her post.

We genuinely hope that Kak Umie’s family and Ah Meng continue their friendship despite the distance.
