Last year, McDonald’s Malaysia embraced the nickname Malaysians affectionately bestowed upon them, ‘Mekdi’, by displaying it loudly and proudly at their very first local outlet in Bukit Bintang.

Recently, they decided to take their patriotism game up a notch by allowing Malaysians to choose 16 other outlets, in which will also bear the significant byname.

In conjunction with Merdeka and Malaysia Day, McDonald’s has announced the 16 lucky stores that will wear a ‘Mekdi’ emblem as a badge of honour awarded by Malaysians.

The word ‘Mekdi’ stems from how Malaysians pronounce McDonald’s shortened name, McD, which is glorious considering our tendency to create our own localised terminology, just like how we address our Independence Day, or Hari Kemerdekaan simply as ‘Merdeka’, which means free or independent in Malay.

“Fondly known to Malaysians as Mekdi, McDonald’s has become the brand it is today because of the unwavering support of our customers. The Mekdi name created a lot of excitement last year when we first revealed the signage at our iconic Bukit Bintang restaurant, and this showed how Mekdi truly resonated with Malaysians from all walks of life. So this year, we wanted to pay tribute to more Malaysians across the country by turning their favourite McDonald’s into a Mekdi as well,” said Hajjah Melati Abdul Hai, the Vice President and Chief Marketing Officers of McDonald’s Malaysia.

But that’s not all!

Of course, with Malaysians come good food, and McDonald’s is no stranger to that.

McDonald’s Malaysia has also introduced a new twist to their fragrant and delicious Nasi Lemak McD. They’re now serving it with a Rendang Ayam option!

Customers can now also choose to have their Nasi Lemak McD with either a Spicy Chicken McDeluxe Cutlet or a Grilled Chicken Burger (GCB) Cutlet.

Their dessert menu is also getting a local-flavour infusion with their all new McFlurry Cendol, which features delicious gula melaka, coconut bits, creamy vanilla soft-serve and cendol jelly.

Other exciting Malaysia-inspired desserts such as the Corn Pie and the cendol-flavoured ice cream are also making a comeback!

So, what are you waiting for? Head on over to your nearest Mekdi and don’t miss out!
