A local woman was detained during a raid by enforcement personnel from the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) yesterday (13 October) at a house in Muar at 10 AM, after she was suspected of having intimate relations with a foreign man and having a child with him.

According to a report by Berita Harian, the woman in her 30s and the foreign man in his 40s from a neighbouring country, who works as a contractor here, were scantily dressed when JAINJ officers raided the house they were staying at.

“As soon as enforcement officers knocked on their door, the couple came out in a ‘mamai’ (groggy) state, like people who had just woken up. The results of the inspection found that the couple had lived in the house in question for 2 years to the point where they had a child together,”

“The child is now 3 months old and was born in a hospital, and has a birth certificate. This man works as a contractor. When the raid was carried out, the man tried to escape through the back door, but he was chased down by enforcement officers,” JAINJ explained.

They claimed to be married

When questioned, the couple claimed to have married in a neighbouring country, though they failed to produce any documentation to prove this. They only managed to showcase a photo of themselves together.

“The picture shown, while (the couple was) dressed in Raya clothing, is questionable, and it is not a picture of them getting married. In fact, the couple also does not remember the date that they got married,”

“Additionally, enforcement officers also asked the woman to show her passport (stamp) to the neighbouring country, but she said she had entered there illegally. Therefore, the couple was detained to assist in the investigation, and they will be charged under Section 23 of the Johor Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1997,” they added.

The charge for the offence of khalwat (being in close proximity with a member of the opposite sex to whom one is not married) carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or 3 years imprisonment or whipping, or all 3 punishments, if they are found guilty.
