The Ministry of Education has recently announced that the current syllabus for primary schools will be re-evaluated, following the viral case of a teacher who nearly got fired for voicing out against the syllabus.

In response to the re-evaluation of the syllabus, local emcee and standup comedian, Gajen Nad took to his TikTok account and shared what he wished he could have learnt in school back then. (Un)surprisingly, if we were to look back at the knowledge we gained back then, most of the topics that Gajen had “proposed” were not fully exposed to us, and they are certainly not exposed to the students in school today.

First thing first, Gajen said that the first thing he would want to learn is about health, or precisely, diet nutrition and the food we consume. While students today are still learning Pendidikan Jasmani & Kesihatan (PJK), the local comedian also mentioned that he would love to dive deeper into exercises.

As we’re highly recommended to go for health screenings once every two to three years, Gajen also listed “reading medical reports” in his wishlist. It’s not always talked about but medical reports are one of the most significant documents in our life, as those are the papers that keep track of our health.

Next, Gajen spoke about management as another element that he wished were in the previous syllabus, and it goes from time management to people management. Management skills are not only important in the working culture but also crucial to help you soldier through your days as a student in university.

Languages and communication skills were also mentioned, and living in a multiracial country, learning more languages and enhancing your communication skills certainly do not harm.

Lastly, Gajen listed investment and purchasing properties in his wishlist, as he said the timing in investing brings a lot of effects. Going through his wishlist, it is undeniable that we were not exposed sufficiently to these subjects in school, yet they became a crucial part of our adult life.

Gajen, whose favourite subject in school was Kemahiran Hidup for its balance of practical and theory then asked fellow Malaysians to ponder about something.

“Imagine after you’ve graduated, you don’t know how to file your income tax, buy/sell a house, buy/sell a car.”

Fellow Malaysians, do you think that the subjects mentioned could’ve been included in our past and the current syllabus?
