Last week, it was reported that the ‘Godfather’ of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Geoffrey Hinton had resigned from his position at Google in an effort to be able to freely speak out on the dangers of AI.

Among these dangers is the possibility that people will lose out on jobs that can easily be taken over by the technology. Well, it appears that this is already happening in Malaysia.

VieN @ CAFKL2023 took to their Twitter post to share a screenshot of from a post by a business that utilised AI to create an advertisement. The post also listed out the positions they DID NOT have to hire, which led them to save cost.

VieN @ CAFKL2023 wrote, “I understand when business owners say they want to ‘use AI to make things easier‘, I understand that some traders want to reduce on costs. But, when they openly say ‘there is no need to pay artists‘, that hurts. The intention is to share with their fellow traders, but it ends up hurting artists.”

The context of the situation is that the business had used AI to create a model to advertise their products.

“The model is like a real person, but the photo is 100% created by AI. The model can hold our products, can do anything,” the business wrote.

They then listed down all the position they did not have to hire (and pay for) as they used AI for all of it, which helped them save cost.

Here is their list

“We saved a lot of costs:

  • Don’t need to pay for model and influencer fees.
  • Don’t need to pay for a professional photographer.
  • Don’t need to rent a studio.
  • Don’t need to buy clothing and headscarf for the model.
  • Don’t need to pay for a make-up artist.
  • Don’t need to pay for a photo editor.
  • Don’t need to buy a camera or lighting equipment for photos.
  • Don’t need to buy nose piercings for the model, or watches or bracelets (jewellery in general).

Before this, we used living brand ambassadors. The prettier, they more expensive. With AI, we can get a beautiful looking model without needing to pay for her modelling fees at all!”

VieN @ CAFKL2023 went on to explain that this will end up hurting a lot of people’s careers if others are encouraged to utilise AI to this extent.

“I understand that as humans, we need to catch up with technology, but it hurts when we hear sentences like ‘we don’t need you anymore‘. Especially considering AI itself generates images from existing artists.”

This can very much cause a lot of people to lose out on jobs and income sources, creating struggles which could in turn could hurt the economy as the peoples’ spending power becomes lower.

We want to hear from those affected by this! What do you think? Do feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section.
