When he got married, he thought he was giving his wife the wedding she deserved.

The floral decorations were extravagant, the trays were beautifully arranged, and the wedding hall looked like something straight out of a royal palace. Instagram photos flooded social media, making it look like the perfect fairytale wedding. Behind the smiles, however, was a secret no one knew.

It cost them more than they could afford

To make their dream wedding happen, the newlyweds took out a RM40,000 loan. Not for a house. Not for a car. Just for a single day they believed had to meet everyone else’s expectations.

Two months after the wedding was when things started to go downhill. Instead of enjoying their lives as newlyweds, the couple found themselves sitting in their kitchen eating instant noodles.

“It wasn’t because we couldn’t cook. It was because almost every ringgit we earn went towards repaying the wedding loan.”

One evening, his wife quietly looked at him and said something that stayed with him forever.

“If I knew it would be like this, I’d rather we had a simple wedding and used the money to travel together instead.”

Wedding attendants moved on; the debts remained

He couldn’t argue with her. The lavish decorations were long gone. The guests had moved on with their lives. Even the wedding photos had disappeared beneath newer posts on social media. But the monthly loan repayments remained.

Looking back, he realised they had spent so much trying to impress people who barely remembered the event, while sacrificing the very first years of their marriage.

“The wedding lasts a day. The debt lasts for years. Do you think it’s worth sacrificing the early years of your marriage for a single day that everyone else has already forgotten?” he questioned in a viral Threads post.

What do you think? Is a lavish wedding worth years of debt, or would you keep it simple? Share your thoughts in the comments.
