M’sian Comedian Responds to Jocelyn Chia’s Controversial Jokes, Highlights Comedy With Sensitivity & Empathy

Jocelyn Chia’s controversial jokes about MH370 have sparked widespread controversy, reaching all corners of borders, parties, families, and even fellow Malaysian comedian Harith Iskander.

As a respected figure in the comedy scene, Harith Iskander @harithiskandercomedian took to his TikTok and social media platforms to respond to Jocelyn Chia’s disrespectful jokes, shedding light on the importance of approaching comedy in a more appropriate manner.

“As a comedian, I respect the freedom of expression that we comedians require to do our job. But it is equally important to exercise some level of sensitivity and empathy, especially topics that are personal and tragic.“

In his video response, Harith emphasised the significance of striking a balance between freedom of expression and sensitivity, particularly when it comes to personal and tragic subjects.

As a comedian, he acknowledged the power of comedy as a tool for social commentary but stressed the importance of using this power responsibly.

Quoting Spider-Man’s iconic line, “With great power comes great responsibility”, Harith reminded fellow comedians of the potential impact of their words.

He encouraged his peers to be mindful of the consequences and to strive for a positive and inclusive comedic environment.

“I make fun of Singapore all the time; it is part of the friendly banter that allows us to coexist, like competitive cousins.”

Drawing upon his own experiences, Harith mentioned that he frequently makes humorous jokes about Singapore, emphasising the friendly banter that exists between neighbouring countries. This playful exchange allows for coexistence, fostering a healthy and light-hearted relationship akin to competitive cousins.

As his video drew to a close, Harith took a moment to respond to Jocelyn Chia’s comments about Malaysia being a developing country. Proudly representing his nation, he highlighted that while Malaysia may be considered a developing nation, its people exudes kindness and thoughtfulness.

“Malaysia, we may be a developing nation, but when it comes to kindness and thoughtfulness, we are definitely first world.”
