2 Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) personnel have been arrested on suspicion of being involved in an extortion case against a 32-year-old man who was reported dead at his home near Kampung Asam Jawa in Baling, Kedah, on Friday (19 September).

According to a report by Sinar Harian, the Baling District Acting Police Chief, Deputy Superintendent Ahmad Salimi Md Ali, shared that the victim’s 74-year-old mother reported the incident after the victim returned home and told her that he was stopped by the 2 police personnel, who confiscated his phone and demanded RM200 to get the device back.

When the 2 of them wanted to hand over the money to the police personnel, the victim suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness before being confirmed dead by a medical officer from the Parit Panjang Health Clinic.

“The results of the investigation at the scene found that there were no signs of injury on the victim’s body, and there were no criminal elements. The autopsy at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital confirmed that the cause of death was a sudden heart attack,” he explained.

The two PDRM personnel were arrested

The police have opened an investigation under Section 385 of the Penal Code and arrested the 2 police personnel involved, aged 24 and 27, respectively, to assist in the investigation.

“A check found that both suspects had no criminal records, while their urine tests were also negative. The remand application was granted for 2 days until Monday (22 September),” he added.

A disciplinary investigation has also been opened against the 2 police personnel involved, and Deputy Superintendent Ahmad Salimi assures that his department is taking this incident seriously.
