According to The Hollywood Reporter, Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh will soon become part of James Cameron’s Avatar universe after it was announced that she would be playing a human scientist named Dr. Karina Mogue in the upcoming sequels.

James Cameron announced the news in a statement, saying,

“Throughout her career, Michelle has always created unique and memorable characters. I look forward to working with Michelle to do the same thing on the Avatar sequels.”

Avatar, which was released in 2009, is still the highest-grossing film of all time garnering USD$2.7 billion (approx RM11.2 billion) worldwide.

Now, this movie is expanding into a franchise as four sequels have been planned so far. Avatar 2 and 3 began filming simultaneously in 2017. The first planned sequel, Avatar 2, is set to have Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana reprise their roles Jake Sully and Neytiri and is set to be released on 18th December 2020. 

Meanwhile, Michelle Yeoh announced the exciting news of her role in the upcoming Avatar sequel on her Instagram as well, saying,

“I am very very excited to be part of the Avatar franchise and can’t wait to work with legendary James Cameron soon.”
