For many of us, going to jail is not on our bucket list, and we try our best not to go anywhere near it. However, this elderly man in Thailand stole some soap so that he could go to jail.

According to Thairath, a 60-year-old man went into a pharmacy in Sattahip, Chonburi, on July 27. While there, he stole 3 pieces of soap (RM2.09 each) in plain view of the others.

The pharmacy owner apprehended the old man and then called the local authorities to inform them that a theft had occurred in their store. After seeing this situation, a kind samaritan wanted to pay for the soaps so that the old man could be free, but he did not allow her to do so.

The man was later identified as Pichit. He was tight-lipped during the initial investigations, but later, he revealed his true motive for taking the soaps. He said,

“I don’t have a job, I don’t have money, and I have no friends.”

He explained that by committing a theft, he can go to jail where there are 3 meals offered a day and a roof over his head. There are also other inmates he can talk to when he feels lonely.

“I wouldn’t starve to death in prison. Outside, I might die even when I’m breathing.”

This is undoubtedly an unfortunate tale. We hope that everything will be able to work out for Mr Pichit.
