A man’s attempt to flee after being chased by police ended in an accident when the car he was driving crashed into five other vehicles along Jalan Dato’ Wong Ah Jang in Kuantan on Saturday (7 February).

Kuantan District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Ashari Abu Samah, said that in the incident at around 3:15 PM, the 27-year-old suspect managed to escape from the accident scene.

However, the suspect was arrested shortly after, along with 136 yaba pills weighing an estimated 15.18 grams and syabu (methamphetamine) weighing about 2.82 grams, with an estimated value of RM2,300.

“No injuries were reported involving the drivers or passengers of the vehicles involved,” he said.

Ashari said the Proton Wira driven by the suspect was detected in a suspicious state while travelling from Jalan Gambut towards Kuantan city centre.

When police attempted to stop him, the suspect sped off and fled towards Jalan Dato’ Wong Ah Jang before crashing into several other vehicles that were stopped at a nearby traffic light junction,” he said.

The frightening incident had earlier gone viral on Facebook and Threads after videos were shared by social media users.

Suspect tested positive for drugs

He added that inspections and initial investigations found the suspect to be positive for methamphetamine, leading to his arrest and the seizure of drugs related to the case.

“The case is being investigated under Section 39A of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 42(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he added.

He explained that the actions taken by the police were in accordance with the law and established standard operating procedures (SOP).
