With Chinese New Year around the corner, many Malaysians are gearing up for what will be a festive celebration for the Year of the Dragon. From reunion dinners to receiving ang paos, one of the best past of this cultural affair is the observance of lion dances. However, one lion dance troop in Singapore has made waves online after they shared an innovate costume they used for a performance.

Referred to formally as the NamYang Lion Dance Centre, the team recently shared a TikTok video to their page @namyangsg of their performers dancing while wearing lion costumes with LED lights. Shining magnificently on the streets of Singapore, the troop carried out their lion dance routine with two performers stealing the show.

From high jumps to swift kicks and getting thrown in the air, the lion costume oscillated over a series of colourful lights, including green, blue, red, and pink. Even the eyes of the lion were aglow against the night sky in their surroundings.

In a brief conversation with WORLD OF BUZZ, a representative from the NamYang Lion Dance Centre stated that they had created the lion costume with LED lights after noticing a trend of the varied costume over the past few years.

Garnering a massive response online, many users commented on how beautiful the lion costume was, while another light-heartedly called this ensemble a celestial lion.

Nevertheless, one of the most fruitful comments of the bunch came from a user who praised the centre for their modern approach to a traditional practice.

It’s cool to see lion dancers keep up with the times. I hope we never lose this art form in Singapore,” commented the user.
