In case you haven’t heard, Donald Trump, President of the United States of America, has stated that the US now recognises Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

This drew outrage from a lot of world leaders as well as citizens across the globe as many believe that this will put a setback in the plans to establish peace between Palestine and Israel.

In an effort to stand by Palestinians, according to the New Straits Times, more than thousands of Malaysians had taken to the streets to protest Trump’s statement. All these individuals from different backgrounds came together to make their voices heard. Umno Youth Chief, Khairy Jamaluddin, took charge in passing a memorandum to the US Embassy.

Some of the things that were covered in the Memorandum were:

  • Condemnation of Trump administration’s decision to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel
  • Non-negotiable demand made in solidarity with the international community
  • Urging the United States to respect the United Nations Security Council Resolution 478

In a message to Trump, Khairy said, “Mark my words, President Trump, we are not here for conflict but we want to make sure that even the most powerful man in the world respects international law.”

According to The Star, the demonstration did not just see UMNO leaders making an appearance but also members from the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party as well. Plus, besides the protest that took place here in Malaysia, there are also protests being carried out in Jakarta.

As a result, many Malaysians found themselves stuck in traffic during the protests, as pointed out by Astro Radio News; after all, many of the main roads such as Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Parliment were heavily congested.

For those of you about to head home, we recommend checking your routes beforehand to avoid getting stuck in traffic, just in case!
