A routine e-hailing trip became an unforgettable lesson in generosity when a driver picked up a Bangladeshi construction worker in Subang Bestari to take him to Jalan Klang Lama.

For much of the 40-minute journey, the passenger remained silent, gazing out of the window. Sensing that something was weighing on his mind, the driver gently struck up a conversation.

Unpaid for three months

The worker shared that his employer had failed to pay his salary for three consecutive months before disappearing entirely. He had worked as a tile installer on various construction sites, but the company collapsed, leaving its workers with nothing. Now, he was on his way to stay with a friend who had promised to help him find work at a new condominium project.

When asked how he had managed to survive all this time without an income, his answer was simple yet heartbreaking:

“My friends helped me a little. Sometimes they bought eggs for me.”

An unexpected RM5 tip

The rest of the journey passed in silence, filled with thoughts too heavy for words. Upon reaching the destination, the driver tried to hand him RM5 in change. Instead of taking it, the worker smiled and gently pushed it back.

“It’s okay, brother. Buy yourself a coffee.”

The driver was taken aback. Here was a man who had gone three months without pay, relying solely on the kindness of friends to eat, yet he was insisting that someone else keep the money. When the driver reminded him that he needed the money more, the worker simply smiled again.

“Just pray for me.”

Kindness born from the heart

That small gesture left a lasting impression. RM5 may seem insignificant to many, but to someone who has endured months without income, it could have bought another meal. Yet, the passenger chose generosity over hardship.

Sometimes, those with the least to give are the ones who give the most, proving that kindness and dignity stem not from abundance, but from the heart. In his viral Threads post, the e-hailing driver prayed to the Almighty to ease the passenger’s struggles.
