Earlier this May, Jamal was charged for the offence of being a public nuisance as he had previously smashed beer bottles with a sledgehammer in front of the Selangor state secretariat building on Oct 5 last year (2017), as reported by NST. This was an act of protest against The Better Beer Festival 2017.

The proceeding took place in Ampang Puteri Specialist Hospital ward, on 25 May 2018, where Jamal was recovering from back pain.

He had later gone into hiding for nearly two months before he was arrested in Indonesia by Indonesian police last Monday, and was deported back to Malaysia on July 5. He had been in custody since last Friday and was denied bail by the Ampang Magistrate’s Court.

According FMT, he was taken to the Magistrate’s Court today (11 July) and has pleaded guilty to the charges under Section 290 of the Penal Code. He was also fined RM400 by magistrate Raja Raja Noor Adila Raja Mahyaldin and would face one month in jail if he fails to settle the fine.

Jamal apologised to the court saying that he did not intend to cause chaos in public by smashing beer bottles.

“It was just a gimmick as a protest against the Selangor government for its plans to approve the Oktoberfest event that could have encouraged everyone to consume alcohol openly.”

He expressed that he did not want to see people suffering from the side effects of drinking and was glad that his efforts paid off as the beer festival was eventually cancelled.

What do you think of Jamal finally pleading guilty to this offence? Do you think his justification for his act is valid? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!
