Internet Explorer will no longer be available after 25 years of providing its services since 1995. This comes after Microsoft announced that they will end support for Internet Explorer 11 across its Microsoft 365 apps and services.

Starting 30 November 2020, the Microsoft Teams web app will no longer support Internet Explorer 11, and starting 17 August 2021, the remaining Microsoft 365 apps and services will no longer support Internet Explorer 11.

In a post by Microsoft’s product team, they said that “Customers will have a degraded experience or will be unable to connect to Microsoft 365 apps and services on Internet Explorer 11.”

“For degraded experiences, new Microsoft 365 features will not be available or certain features may cease to work when accessing the app or service via Internet Explorer 11.”

“While we know this change will be difficult for some customers, we believe that customers will get the most out of Microsoft 365 when using the new Microsoft Edge. We are committed to helping make this transition as smooth as possible,” they added.

In regards to businesses specifically built for Internet Explorer, the Verge explains that Microsoft hopes the new Internet Explorer legacy mode in the Chromium-based Microsoft Edge browser will help, which will continue to let businesses access old sites until Microsoft full drops support for Internet Explorer 11 within Windows 10.

“We want to be clear that IE 11 isn’t going away and that our customers’ own legacy IE 11 apps and investments will continue to work. Customers have made business-critical investments in IE 11 legacy apps and we respect that those apps are still functioning,” the product team said.

Internet Explorer has been criticised over the years for being slow and unreliable while many new and more efficient web browsers were better favoured by users.

Now that Internet Explorer will be gone forever, we can’t help but reminisce with our childhood and remember the times when Internet Explorer gave us memories that will last us a lifetime. #gonebutnotforgotten

While we know that Internet Explorer may not be the best browser out there, it certainly played a big part when we were growing up (if you’re a 90’s kid) and seeing it go feels like a part of our childhood fading away. Tell us your best and worst experience with Internet explorer in the comments below!
