Horrifying footage has surfaced online, of the Mount Ruang volcano erupting in the North Sulawesi Province of Indonesia.

Many have taken to social media to showcase the footage, among them is ruang lifehack Twitter page.

Volcano 4

They wrote, “Breaking news, the eruption of Mount Ruang is shown to be emitting lava and lightning, hundreds of residents have been evacuated.”

In the footage showcased, massive amounts of smoke and lava can be seen erupting from Mount Ruang as lightning petrifyingly crackles around it.

Volcano 3

According to The Japan Times, Mount Ruang first erupted at 9:45pm on Tuesday (April 16) and 4 times throughout Wednesday (April 15).

Mount Ruang is known as a stratovolcano, which have relatively steep sides and are more cone-shaped than shield volcanoes. They are formed from viscous, sticky lava that does not flow easily. The lava therefore builds up around the vent forming a volcano with steep sides.

Stratovolcanoes are more likely to produce explosive eruptions due to gas building up in the viscous magma.
