As Chinese New Year festivities draw to a close, many Malaysians all across the country are recalling just how their celebrations went this year. But for a few lucky celebrants in Sabah, they had the opportunity to witness a lion dance unlike any other, which also incorporated another traditional performance familiar to their people.

In a TikTok clip shared by TikTok user @farabbhy, Malaysian makeup artist and content creator Fara posted a snippet from a lion dance performance carried out at the residence of her close friend. Delighting all visitors who attended the event, the lion dancers incorporated aspects of a traditional Murut dance called Anggalang Magunatip into their performance.

Cheekily bouncing around with the costume on, the dancers proceeded to swiftly jump over a few bamboo poles laid on the ground. According to cultural tradition, the Anggalang Magunatip dance is conducted where performers move their feet between oscillating bamboo poles on the ground, all in an attempt to not get their feet trapped between each piece.

Moving through each pole carefully yet playfully, the lion dancers glide over the bamboo with ease, crossing over multiple times to entertain the group who gathered to watch them. By the end of the clip, the dancers shifted to walking amongst the crowd, resuming their traditional lion dance moves.

Garnering a massive response online, various Sabahans commented on how heart-warming the performance was, depicting the fusion of two distinct cultures for one celebration.

Other users even called the performance modern and new, while also keeping to traditional aspects of the lion dance when celebrating Chinese New Year.

“I want a lion dance – but make it Sabahan. Say no more!” jokingly wrote one user from the perspective of the dancers.
