Just when we thought the outbreak of Covid-19 in Malaysia is being controlled, four new cases had been identified today (1 March 2020).

According to Malaysia’s Ministry of Health, there are currently a total of 29 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Malaysia. This piece of information was announced via the Health Ministry’s Twitter account, and many Malaysians were alerted.

Among the four people who contracted Covid-19, Case 26 (52 years old, male) travelled to Shanghai, China around mid-January 2020. He began experiencing sore throat on 27 February, thus he sought treatment at a local hospital. Tests for Covid-19 had shown positive on 29 February, which then resulted in his transfer to Sungai Buloh Hospital for proper treatment and further investigations.

The other three new cases are categorised as close contacts with previously confirmed Covid-19 patients.

All of them are Malaysians and they are currently in stable condition. Case 27 is a young nurse that had close contact with Case 24, while Case 29 was being admitted into the same hospital ward as Case 24 on 21 February. The reason Case 29 was infected with the virus was that Case 24 had not been tested with Covid-19 at that point.

As for Case 28, the 45-year-old male is Case 25’s colleague. Case 25 is a 54-year-old Italian man who is married to a Malaysian.

According to The Malaysian Insight, one of these four patients is an employee at Khazanah Nasional. Khazanah released a statement regarding this issue, reassuring that they are working closely with the health authorities and their office management. Necessary safety measures and precautions will be taken to ensure the health of their employees.

The people who were in close contact with the employee who had been confirmed with Covid-19 are in the process of being identified.

Although there is a spike in confirmed cases in Malaysia, it’s more important to keep calm and take care of our immunity. Remember to always wash your hands and avoid crowded places.

Stay tuned for more updates.
