Chinese beach-goers are quirky to say the least, and go to all sorts of lengths to cover themselves from the sun’s rays – even putting ‘bikinis’ on their faces.

This time, they have a more economical trend up their sleeves.

Green algae has appeared on the beaches of Qingdao, China, and seeing such vast quantities available, locals thought it’d be a good idea to slather algae on themselves to avoid sun exposure.

Which is funny as: a) many of us avoid algae and see them as an eyesore, gross even!  b) why go to the beach if one wants to avoid the sun’s rays???

Anyway, apparently the Chinese thought otherwise.

It seems that the algae isn’t harmful at all to humans and these people are using them as a coolant for their skin against the Sun’s rays. Maybe it works just like Aloe Vera, and if it does, why not I suppose?
