From Banker to Muay Thai Fighter, Meet the Malaysian Who Chose to #NeverSettle

Oh and, yes, she’s a girl. Meet Germaine Yeap.

Germaine, 32, who was known to be a very rebellious child growing up, comes from a family of bankers. Her great-grandfather, grandfather and father were all in the banking industry while her sisters are currently still in the industry too. In fact, her own great-grandfather started his own bank.

Despite coming from a family of bankers, Germaine always envisioned becoming a Muay Thai fighter. However, because of her background, it was only natural for her to enter the banking line as well, to continue the family tradition; and she did.

She started working in the treasury department of a bank here. However, it wasn’t long before the banking job started to take a toll on her.

“I felt really drained and worn out. I was becoming quite a negative person,” she said.

After five years, she finally decided she could #NeverSettle for the life she was currently living. She began to see clearly that banking just wasn’t for her. So she took the bold move to quit.

That’s when Germaine was finally able to focus on her passion for Muay Thai and Martial Arts, and make it a full-time career. She hasn’t looked back since.

“I hardly think Martial Arts is a career,” Germaine’s mum said.

Evidently, the transition she made wasn’t always smooth sailing. Her family found it difficult to watch her leave the banking line and move into Martial Arts, but Germaine still continued to persevere towards her goal.

Nothing could stop her. Before this, her life had been a blur, but now her vision is clear and she knew she needed to push on regardless of what others thought of her. So she trained long and hard until one day, she even started to win fighting competitions! You go, girl!

With Muay Thai, Germaine is now able to express herself in ways she never could before, and today, she’s not only a Martial Artist but a stunt actress as well.

“At the end of the day, if she’s happy, we’re happy for her,” Germaine’s mum said.
