Required action or inciting racial insensitivity?

Selangor Assemblymen (ADUN Jeram), Shaid Rosli, posted on his Facebook page yesterday that he has sent a memorandum to the operational manager of Jaya Grocer’s latest branch set to open on 3 December at Ecoworld, Bandar Puncak Alam. Following this, he added that the management has sealed the entrance to the Alcohol and Non-Halal section of the store after receiving information regarding the objection.

The objection was based on a petition signed by 5,522 people supporting the motion to ban the selling of alcohol in the premise. In a letter addressed to the manager of the branch, it stated that the objection is made based on several factors which include:

  1. The sensitivity of the people from Puncak Alam which consists of 90 per cent of Muslims need to be protected
  2. A lot of social crimes and familial relationships damaging result from alcoholic drinks.
  3. By throwing alcoholic drink bottles everywhere, the effects of vandalism can be seen in public places.
  4. This is in line to make Bandar Puncak Alam 100 per cent free from the influence of alcohol.

Shaid thanked the Chairmen of the Residents Association, MPP of Bandar Puncak Alam, mosques & surau on their cooperation to making this protest a success. He even said that now with the store cooperating, they can now support the store by shopping for groceries there.

“This is Puncak Alam. This is Malay Territory!”

While most comments were in support of the ADUN, some accused him of trying to incite racial differences. While in the Jaya Grocer Facebook page, netizens were calling the store out for their “backwards” decision.
