Chinese New Year is still ongoing, with many all over the world celebrating through family gatherings, playing with fireworks, indulging in delicious food, enjoying lion dances and more.
And in most places, people of different races are joining in the celebrations alongside their Chinese friends. Though, this little girl didn’t get that memo.
Netizen, Shirley 宝贝, took to her TikTok account to share a video by @elrealtorjose, which showcases an adorable Mexican toddler who is desperately crying because she wants to be Chinese so that she, too, can be part of the Chinese New Year celebrations. What she doesn’t realise is that, she doesn’t have to be Chinese to celebrate it.
According to a report by Daily Mail, the little girl goes to a fully-immersive trilingual school where lessons are taught in English, Spanish and Mandarin.
With all the Chinese New Year celebrations happening at her school, she apparently came home feeling left out as she thinks that only Chinese people can participate in the festive celebration.
“Why are you sad?” her father asked her.
Just before responding, the adorable little girl started desperately crying, “I just want to be Chinese”.
“But, why?” her father asked again, to which she responded, “Because I do”, while still crying.
“But you are, you’re Mexican”, her father told her.
“No, I don’t want to be Mexican”, the girl says back while still crying profusely.
In the end, her father tells her that she could, maybe, be Chinese tomorrow and asked her if she can speak Chinese, prompting the girl to show off her Mandarin speaking skills in which she is learning in school.
“I only say ‘xishou’,” to which she clarified means ‘wash your hands’.
We genuinely hope that someone takes the little girl for a Chinese New Year open house where she can immerse herself in celebrations!
