Have you ever wondered which universities produce the most employable graduates?

Well, according to the QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2018, three Malaysian universities made it into the world’s top 500 higher education institutions.

Leading the trio is the prestigious Universiti Malaya (UM), which ranks in the band of 201 to 250. Meanwhile, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) proudly made it into the 301 to 500 band.

This ranking, which features 495 universities around the world, is useful for students who are in the process of choosing a university to further their studies as they can make a global comparison and ultimately, a better informed decision,Ā NSTĀ reported.

“These results indicate that universities cannot rely on reputation alone. They also need to ensure that they are committed to innovative teaching methods, proactively forging relationships with businesses, while providing numerous opportunities for students to meet potential future employers,” QS Research Director, Ben Sowter said.Ā

These are the five metrics used to calculate the ranking.

  • Employer reputation
  • Alumni outcomes
  • Partnerships with employers
  • Employer-student connections
  • Graduate employment rate

FYI, universities that were placed in the top 5 spots are:

  1. Stanford University
  2. University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA)
  3. Harvard University
  4. The University of Sydney
  5. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

It was revealed that Stanford University managed to secure the top spot because the institute scored perfectly in:

  • Employer reputation
  • Alumni outcomes
  • Partnership with employers

After this ranking surfaced, Malaysians particularly those who graduated from UM, UiTM, and UKM, were proud that their alma mater made it into the top 500.

Some also reckoned that it’s not the university which determines one’s employability, but rather the working attitude and first impression that one gives to the employer.

Anyway, this is certainly good news for fresh grads, especially those who graduated from these three local universities. Let’s hope more Malaysian universities make the top 500 list next year!
