A 21-year-old Malaysian girl from Tebrau, Johor, is suspected to have become the victim of a ‘love scam’ syndicate, after she had gone missing since April of this year.

The victim’s brother, 25-year-old Qi, sought the Malaysian International Humanitarian Organisation’s (MHO’s) help in locating and bringing his sister home. Via a press conference held by MHO, Qi explained that his sister, who had been working as a cashier in Singapore, had taken a flight from Senai Airport to Bangkok, Thailand, on April 28 (Monday).

She had allegedly followed a male Chinese national to Bangkok.

Just days after she had travelled to Bangkok, she had reached out to her aunt on WhatsApp to ask for a loan of RM1,700. However, when the aunt attempted to call her, the man from China had picked up the phone.

“He introduced himself as my younger sister’s boyfriend and said that my sister did not want to talk to me for the time being. He said he’ll do the talking as her representative,” Qi explained.

His mother ultimately transferred the RM1,700 to the girl’s bank account, and she has not been contactable since.

She might have been trafficked to another country

They also checked with the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok, and it was confirmed that the girl had flown from Senai Airport to Bangkok, but there is no record of her leaving Thailand.

MHO Secretary-General Datuk Hishamuddin Hashim, who was leading the press conference, explained that, based on past cases, victims with no records of leaving Thailand usually end up being smuggled into Myanmar through illegal routes.

The girl’s family, along with MHO, are now seeking the public’s help in locating the girl. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to come forward to help speed up rescue efforts.

With the consent of her family, the girl’s face was revealed to assist in the public’s effort to identify the girl.
