AirAsia Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes has announced that he will be shutting down all his personal social media accounts, including Facebook, Threads, and Instagram, after what he described as six years marked by challenges and major shifts in both his personal life and career.

According to Kosmo!, the corporate figure said the decision came after reassessing his life priorities and growing increasingly frustrated with the rampant spread of fake news and scams on Meta platforms.

“I closed Threads today. Facebook will be shut down tomorrow, followed by Instagram. I’ve truly enjoyed social media, it has brought me many wonderful experiences,” he said.

“However, I’m deeply disappointed by the volume of fake news and scams circulating on Meta’s platforms. I’ve personally fallen victim to several scams that could have been prevented with the technology they possess,” he added.

Tony noted that stepping away from social media also symbolises the end of a difficult six-year chapter, which included the Covid-19 pandemic, AirAsia’s classification under PN17 status, and the company’s rebuilding efforts.

“During that time, we successfully established Capital A and five high-value companies, which are now collectively estimated to be worth USD 3 billion.”

He clarified that his decision was not driven by negative comments, but rather by a desire to focus on more meaningful pursuits in the next phase of his life.

“Negative comments have actually motivated me to improve. I just hope social media platforms can be used for good,” he added.

Tony also expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported him over the years, including his loyal followers since the beginning of his social media journey.

“Thank you for all the support, both positive and negative. Lots of love, Tony,” he wrote.
