Aside from the many things that Thailand is generally famous for, tourists flock to the stalls that line up the streets just to get a taste of, you guessed it, fried insects.

While some may not be able to stomach the idea of giving these creepy crawlies a taste, it is by and large a thing for adventurous connoisseurs. From bamboo worms, to grasshoppers, they are deep-fried and seasoned with pepper, giving each serving a crunchy satisfaction.

The Gordian Worm or better known as Horsehair Worm is a parasite that is COMMONLY found in grasshoppers, crickets, and cockroaches. They tumpang in the host body until they are ready to lay eggs. According to research done by University of Kentucky, the Horsehair Worm can grow up to 10 cm or longer if it has fed enough from its host, though they are considered harmless to humans. Regardless, you wouldn’t want one inside your stomach too, would you?

Despite sentencing the insects to its deep-fried death, there is no guarantee that the parasite living in the abdomen would suffer the same fate as its host. Moreover, these insects are usually cooked in bulk, making it impossible for the seller to check for each and every one of these crispy critters to see if they were thoroughly cooked. In fact, the Thailand officer himself reminded the public to be wary when eating these insects due to these parasites.

So guys, just remember to look out for these tiny vermin while indulging on these crispy critters. You will never know what awaits you inside.
