A university orientation for the newbies is the perfect time to familiarise themselves with the place and to learn about the relevant procedures throughout their time in the institution.

A group of facilitators at a local university in Johor was recently slammed for staging a fight solely for a birthday celebration, which happened during the orientation in the grand hall itself, where the new intakes were left flabbergasted and confused before the fight was revealed to be a prank.

Some of the facilitators were seen yelling in the hall and scolding some of the new intakes for voicing out during the fight.

“Shut up! Don’t record this!”

Another facilitator said they had to sacrifice their semester break to guide the new intake, only for the orientation to go haywire.

Other intakes who didn’t voice out could only sit and watch the “fight” until the prank unfolded itself with a birthday song that revealed the nature of the argument.

The facilitators and some of the crowds then cheered and clapped for the birthday girl. The video was originally shared on TikTok but has since circulated on social media, including Facebook.

Syok sendiri & unprofessional”

Malaysian social media users were baffled to see the lack of professionalism displayed by the seniors, who should’ve guided the new intakes and shown them a good example.

“This is not the orientation for the new intakes, this is for the seniors who feel syok sendiri.”

“This is stupid. My professor was right. Higher education doesn’t mean you’re smart, and this is an example.”

“Out of all the students there, there must be at least 1 who was resisting the urge to punch the facilitator in the face.”

“This is not professional at all. It’s a professional and formal setting, but it was turned into a circus. What an embarrassment.”

“Trust me, kid. When you look back at this in the future, you’ll criticise yourself. You don’t need to wait for others to call you stupid. You’ll feel that yourself down the road.”

“This is embarrassing, and this is what happens when you feel you’re the most senior there.”

At the time of writing (October 3), the university has yet to respond on the matter.

Can you recall your orientation day? What did you do during the activities?
