What started as a series of unsettling encounters has now led to the arrest of a male public university student in Shah Alam, after he was accused of allegedly stalking and harassing a fellow student for months.

According to police, the suspect, who is in his 20s, was arrested in Section 7, Shah Alam, on Monday night (13 July) following a report lodged by a 22-year-old female student. The victim claimed she had been repeatedly followed and harassed by the man since April, both around the university campus and near her residence.

CCTV footage of footwear sniffing goes viral

The case drew widespread public attention after CCTV footage went viral on Threads, allegedly showing the same individual entering an apartment building’s corridor, taking a pair of shoes from outside a unit, and smelling them before leaving.

Police investigations later revealed that the woman recognised the man seen in the viral CCTV footage as the same person who had allegedly been following her for months.

The circulating post urged students in the area to beware of the man caught sniffing shoes outside a condominium unit, an act the Threads user described as “creepy and uncomfortable”.

Suspect apprehended by police

Acting on information gathered during the investigation, police arrested the suspect, who is a student at the same university as the victim, at around 8:30 pm in Section 7. Authorities said preliminary checks found that the man had no prior criminal record, and his initial drug screening came back negative.

The case is being investigated under Section 507A of the Penal Code, Malaysia’s anti-stalking law, which criminalises repeated acts of harassment that cause fear or distress, as confirmed in an official statement by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

If convicted, the offence carries a penalty of up to three years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both. Police are urging anyone with additional information related to the case to contact the investigating officer, Inspector Sabryna Taha, at 014-5130450 to assist with the ongoing investigation.
