Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob today announced that the federal government is planning to build a drag racing circuit in all states in the country. He further revealed that the proposal will be included in the 2023 Budget that is set to be tabled in October this year.

As reported by Bernama, the Prime Minister elaborated that the proposed drag racing circuits are meant to enhance the development of our nation’s motor sports industry. He said that the facilities would also give local youths the opportunity to participate in motor sports activities through proper channels.

Moreover, Ismail urged youths to participate in the MyFit@Motorsports 2022, which is a grassroots motoring development programme, involving the development of motorcycle and car sports organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. By participating in the programme, young people not only can gain knowledge through training, courses and clinic, but may also potentially be scouted for participation in motor tournaments and racing at the state and national level.

Speaking at the opening of the 2022 RXZ Members 4.0 Programme at the Terengganu International Drag Strip in Gong Badak, Kuala Nerus in Terengganu today, the Prime Minister stressed that the government will always support activities by motoring clubs, especially in helping help those affected by hardship, such as flood victims.

Ismail asserted,

“Many motoring clubs are involved in charity work… During the flood, they helped clean houses of flood victims… Perhaps we can organise (a gathering of riders) every year and the government can provide sponsorship. In this way, we can highlight the interest of the young people, hence, reduce the negative perception of riders associated with various names such as Mat Motor,”

As for the drag racing circuits, the Prime Minister revealed that as of right now, two circuits have been built, namely in Terengganu and Melaka.
