A supermarket in Teluk Intan, Perak, has issued a public apology following a viral incident in which a customer placed a pet dog inside a shopping trolley while shopping at the premises, sparking widespread outrage.

In a statement released on Tuesday night (4 August), the store’s management stated that immediate action was taken as soon as staff became aware of the situation. The customer was informed that pets are strictly prohibited inside the premises and was instructed to remove the dog immediately.

The supermarket was closed for a day for cleaning

Addressing concerns raised by Muslim customers regarding hygiene and religious purity, the management stressed that the matter was being treated with the utmost seriousness.

Following the incident, the company sought guidance from the Hilir Perak District Office of the Perak Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPk) regarding the appropriate cleaning procedures.

Based on the official recommendations received, the premises were temporarily closed today (5 August) to undergo a religious cleansing process in full accordance with the prescribed guidelines. Management confirmed that the supermarket would only reopen once the cleaning was complete.

Sertu cleansing completed and strict SOPs enforced

In a follow-up statement this morning, the supermarket management confirmed that the premises had successfully undergone the sertu cleansing process.

As advised by religious authorities, this involved washing the affected area once with soil-mixed water, followed by six thorough rinses with clean water.

To prevent future occurrences, the store has installed prominent “No Pets Allowed” signage at its entrance and refreshed all staff on standard operating procedures (SOPs).

The supermarket further offered its sincere apologies for the distress and inconvenience caused, accepting full responsibility for the incident and pledging to strengthen preventive measures moving forward. According to a report by Sin Chew Daily, the store’s management claimed that the customer involved was a foreign national.

The incident gained traction on social media after photos showing the dog inside the shopping trolley circulated online, drawing sharp criticism from the public.
