Police have confirmed that an incident involving a Standard 5 male student, who was injured after falling from a garage roof at a school in Batu Berendam, Melaka, was not related to bullying or abuse.

Melaka Tengah District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit, stated that investigations into the incident, which occurred at approximately 12:40 PM on Wednesday (6 May), found that the student who fell was the same individual who had allegedly thrown another student’s shoe onto the awning.

Details of the incident

According to the police, the incident took place during a class transition period. The student allegedly threw a peer’s shoe from the first floor of the school building, causing it to land on the awning of a bicycle garage below.

The student then attempted to retrieve the shoe by climbing onto the structure. However, while trying to climb back up to the first-floor corridor, a section of the roof collapsed, causing him to fall.

The school provided emergency assistance before the student was taken to Melaka Hospital. He was later transferred to Putra Specialist Hospital for further treatment, where doctors confirmed he had sustained a minor fracture to his right ankle.

Official investigation findings

Christopher added that investigations by police officers, the criminal investigation team, forensic personnel, and witnesses concluded that the incident was purely accidental, as reported by Malaysia Gazette.

He also stated that the student confirmed there were no elements of bullying, abuse, or negligence prior to or during the incident. The case has since been classified as a Police Enquiry Paper (KEP).

This clarification follows earlier reports suggesting that another student, the owner of the shoe, had been the one injured while trying to retrieve his property.
