Squatting is when people occupy a space or land that they have no ownership over. And while squatters are apparently quite common in other countries, they are very rarely heard of in Malaysia.

So, what would you do if you’re unoccupied property was suddenly taken over by squatters?

The MALAYSIA MOST VIRAL Twitter page recently shared a post by an agent who encountered squatters in the form of foreign men, at an empty apartment unit his friend entrusted him to sell.

The agent shared, “Foreigners broke into this house and made it like it’s their own home.”

He was entrusted to sell the apartment, which was supposed to be empty!

“I can help to manage the sales and purchasing process from A to Z, so the owner posted the key to my friend and my friend passed it to me. I asked who lives in the house now, and the owner said that the house had been empty for years. They had not lived there since they bought it because they prefer to live in their hometown.”

“So, I went to see if the condition of the house was okay. When I arrived I could tell that there were people inside the house. But, I was told it was empty. I called my friend to confirm, ‘is it true that the house is empty?’, and I told my friend, ‘there are people in the house who are foreigners!’. I wasn’t the only one surprised, my friend and the owner were surprised too!”

The owner also confirmed that they never rented the apartment to anyone since they bought it 10 years ago.

“These foreigners don’t even know how to speak Malay or English. And I can’t speak their language. In my heart I was thinking, ‘They’re so daring to break into people’s house just like that’.”

“We, even as Malaysians, don’t dare to do anything like this. They, on the other hand, dare to invade other people’s house and behave like they don’t know anything. They’ve managed to drag water from the house next door and for electricity, I don’t know how they managed to connect it.”

The agent also managed to speak to the foreigners’ supervisor, who is a Bangladeshi man, shared that the foreigners have been staying there without paying for rent for a long time.

The Bangladeshi man even asked the agent for proof that he was representing the house owner.

He went on to advise home owners to always check on their unoccupied properties, just in case.
