The Melaka police have arrested 23 individuals from two motorcyclist groups after they were suspected of inciting a riot in front of the Stadthuys Building in Melaka on Sunday (July 27).

The riot was believed to have been caused by some of the motorcyclists who were fined by enforcement officers from the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB).

According to a report by Harian Metro, the state police chief, Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar, shared that one group of motorcyclists, consisting of 9 men and 9 women from Kuala Lumpur and Melaka, had ridden their motorcycles into the Vehicle-Free Zone (CFZ) in Banda Hilir and parked in front of the Stadthuys Building.

The group was fined by MBMB enforcement officers

“Due to their dissatisfaction (from being fined), the group tore up the compound notices and hurled insults at the enforcement officers, which led to another group of motorcyclists from this state (Melaka) becoming upset and a fight breaking out between them.”

“As a result of the fight, a victim from the second group was injured after being beaten with a helmet and padlock by the first group, and was treated at a hospital,” Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar explained.

This led to a police investigation that resulted in the arrests of 23 individuals who were in their 20s and 30s.

“A total of 22 individuals were released on police bail, while a man in his 30s was remanded for 3 days because he is believed to have beaten the victim with a weapon. The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 186 of the same code for obstructing a public servant from performing their duties,” he added.
