A disaster struck Gyirong, Tibet, after a massive mudslide swept through areas along the Himalayan border between Nepal and Tibet in China yesterday (26 August).
The disaster has reportedly killed at least 157 people, including tourists from countries such as Malaysia, India, the United States and the United Kingdom.
4.4-magnitude earthquake reportedly triggered avalanche
CCTV footage of the incident has since made its rounds online, showing people scrambling to flee the area as flash floods hit.
According to The Guardian, initial reports suggest that a 4.4-magnitude earthquake in the area may have triggered an avalanche that caused the floods.
Officials have also warned that the situation could worsen as parts of the river remain blocked by ice, rocks and debris.
Meanwhile, the Nepal Tourism Board reported that preliminary records compiled from travel agencies have identified 17 Malaysians among those reported missing.
Embassy coordinates with local authorities and rescue teams
Meanwhile, Berita Harian reported last night that the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu had received reports from travel agencies that they had lost contact with 11 Malaysian nationals believed to be in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, following severe flooding in the country.
The loss of contact is believed to have been caused by major disruptions to communication networks and electricity supplies following the disaster, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra).
“The Embassy is actively coordinating with local authorities and search and rescue teams deployed by the Nepalese government to locate the affected Malaysian nationals and ensure their safety,” the ministry said.
Wisma Putra has also urged Malaysians living in or travelling to Nepal, especially those near the affected areas, to stay alert, prioritise their safety and follow all safety instructions issued by local authorities.
The ministry added that it will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates as soon as verified information on the Malaysian nationals becomes available.
