This is the true embodiment of Malaysians looking out for each other in this time of need!

Despite the recent announcement of PEMULIH, there are still a large group of Malaysians suffering without income and are continuously struggling to provide meals for their families. From these struggles, a new campaign has been formed by the rakyat, for the rakyat called #KempenBenderaPutih (White Flag Campaign).

A white flag is usually used to indicate when someone has given up but in this context, Malaysians who are struggling during the lockdown are urged to raise a white flag so that they can receive help from others.

The hashtag #KempenBenderaPutih has been trending on Twitter requesting for those who have been struggling during the pandemic to not be ashamed and raise a white flag to indicate that they need help. The campaign is also intended to reduce the rate of suicide which has been increasing among Malaysians since the implementation of the lockdown.

“Any house that has run out of food and supplies, please raise a white flag in front of your house. Let your neighbours see this and help lessen your burden.”

Minister of Housing and Local Government, Zuraida Kamaruddin also tweeted her support for the campaign, pleading to those who are suffering to not make any rash decisions and instead, seek help from their neighbours. However, Twitter users could be seen criticising the minister in the thread for ‘hijacking’ on the rakyat’s initiative.

If you are struggling, just remember that you are not in this alone and you don’t have to be ashamed to seek help. #KempenBenderaPutih is every Malaysian’s efforts to show that we’re truly there for each other.
