As the rescue work for the apartment blaze in Tai Po estate, Hong Kong, continues, the death toll has risen to 94 today (28 November). The casualties include a firefighter who died in the line of duty.

Ho Wai Ho, the firefighter who lost his life in the fire, was scheduled to marry his girlfriend of 10 years next month.

“My superhero completed his job, and now he’s back on Krypton”

Wai Ho shared many intimate moments with his girlfriend on social media, and one currently circulating post shows him confessing his love, saying, “Even if you’re annoyed, I’m still going to say ‘I love you’ 100 times.”

In another post, he also told his girlfriend to wait for him, saying it wouldn’t be long until they reached their desired destination

His girlfriend took to Threads to announce Wai Ho’s death. “My superhero completed his job, and now he’s back on Krypton,” she said.

She also announced that she is taking a short break from everything as she tries to process the loss.

“I’m always proud of you. I really want to hold your hands again,” she remarked in the post.

According to Wai Ho’s social media, he had been with the fire brigade for nearly nine years, and was a police officer before that.

The massive fire that shook Hong Kong

A massive fire broke out at Hung Fook Court in Tai Po, New Territories, Hong Kong, on the afternoon of 26 November. The fire spread to seven buildings, destroying the homes of many residents and making it one of the worst fires in Hong Kong in recent years.

Wai Ho was dispatched to Hung Cheong Building at 3:01 PM to support the firefighting operation. Less than 30 minutes after entering the fire scene, the command centre lost contact, and the Fire Services Department launched an emergency search and rescue procedure, before finding him unconscious at 4:01 PM at an open space in front of an elevator.

Wai Ho had severe burn marks on his face, and he was rushed to the hospital, but succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced dead at 4:45 PM.
