There’s once again a debate going on on social media, mainly Twitter, where people are discussing the pros and cons of having vernacular schools in Malaysia.

And while this debate is mainly about the segregation of races, one politician is apparently seeing the bigger picture of things.

Duyong State Assembly Member (ADUN), Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abd Halem, took to his TikTok account to question why national schools aren’t learning from the business tactics of Chinese schools who partner with corporate companies to build their school halls that can be rented out for weddings and other events.

He wrote, “Maybe this is one of the alternatives to building halls for national schools other than waiting for government allocation?”

In his TikTok video, he explained that he attended a wedding that took place in a Chinese school hall

“This school hall was built with corporate contributions. It’s not like it was actually a contribution, the school is working together with the corporate company. The company built the hall within the school grounds.”

“So, the main use of the hall is for the school’s utilisation. When the school isn’t using it, the corporate company uses it. The company gets the use it along with the school’s parking facilities. And the company gets to use the hall, they get to garner back their income by renting out the hall,” he explained.

He went on to question why national schools haven’t utilised such concepts to improve themselves

“The questions now is that, why are concepts like this successful in Chinese schools, but cannot be successful or don’t know lah if it’s even been attempted by national schools.”

“Wanting to wait for the government to do this but there’s no guarantee, have to collect money lah, government funding isn’t enough lah, have to be frugal lah, but schools need halls. Why are efforts like this not being worked on by national schools?” he added.
