Bukit Aman has confirmed that 3 Malaysians were arrested by Lao authorities for allegedly trying to smuggle 103 packages of marijuana into the country on May 27 (Tuesday).

According to a report by Berita Harian, the Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) Acting Director, Deputy Commissioner Mat Zani @ Mohd Salahuddin Che Ali, shared that the 3 men, aged between 25 and 29, arrived in Loas on a Thai Airways flight.

Investigations also found that the 3 suspects left Malaysia on May 22 (Thursday).

“We are investigating whether the marijuana involved was smuggled from this country (Malaysia) or Thailand. The 3 suspects are currently in the custody of the Lao authorities. We are gathering information, and further investigations are still underway,” he said.

A local rap artist among them

Prior to this, it was reported that 3 Malaysians, including someone who allegedly is a local rap artist, were arrested at Wattay International Airport, on suspicion of smuggling 103 packages of marijuana weighing about 86 kilograms.

The arrests were made by customs officers, airport security forces and several other agencies after they detected suspicious activity during a routine inspection of the 3 Malaysians. Further inspections of their 6 luggage bags revealed 103 packages of marijuana hidden inside.

It is understood that the 3 men were scheduled to board a Thai Airways flight to Germany, and the marijuana is believed to be for distribution there.

All suspects are now being detained in Laos for further investigations and will be charged according to Lao law.
