A Universiti Malaya (UM) student passed away yesterday (17 October) after falling from the third floor of a residential college building on campus.

“The entire UM community extends its deepest condolences and sympathies to the family of the deceased.”

“The university, through the Student Affairs Department, is providing full support and assistance to the family during this difficult time,” UM said in a statement shared on Facebook.

The cause is still under investigation

The obituary of the 22-year-old student, Ahmad Arif Zawir Bin Mohd Ali, who was in his fourth year of Applied Sciences, was shared by the Academy of Islamic Studies at UM.

The dormitory supervisor received a call about the incident at approximately 3:09 PM, and an ambulance arrived at the scene at 3:40 PM. The cause of the fall is still under investigation, according to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

The deceased’s dormitory room has also been cordoned off for investigation.

Assistant Commissioner Shamsudin Mamat, Chief of Police for the Petaling Jaya district, said that authorities are still determining which floor the student fell from, as there were no eyewitnesses at the time of the incident. Ahmad Arif was pronounced dead by medical personnel at 4:25 PM, Malaysia Gazette reported.

Meanwhile, Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Zambry Abd. Kadir stated that the Ministry and UM will provide immediate assistance to the family, as mentioned in his official statement last night.

An autopsy was scheduled for last night to determine the exact cause of death. Stay tuned as we continue to provide updates.
