Feeling for the plight of underprivileged students who often have to go hungry while pursuing their higher education, Malaysian philanthropist, Uncle Kentang, has decided to step in.

Taking to his Facebook page, he showcased his new initiative of meal coupons, where students from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) in Sungai Long can get full meals for an affordable RM6.

He wrote, “UTAR students of Sungai Long, we have launched Kind Hearts Meals for students in need. You can focus on your studies, we will handle your meals.”

At RM6 a coupon, students can use the coupons to get nasi lemak from a kind-hearted stall owner or mixed rice from a pastor who treats the students there like his own kids. Both vendors are located near the university.

“I heard that the nasi lemak aunty, who is a female ‘warrior’ from Sungai Long, would ask students to come back when they are too afraid to include meat (with their meals) and give them meat to eat. I don’t know if she wants to run a business or a fake stall to assist students there,”

“The owner of MR.B Mixed Rice (B记) is a kind pastor, he also sells mixed rice at cheap prices. He treats every student like his children,” Uncle Kentang added.

In another post, Uncle Kentang showcased that he has also launched this programme for students at Tunku Abdul Rahman University (TAR) in Setapak, by placing posters promoting the Kind Hearts Meals initiative at participating vendors and distributing coupons to students there.

While doing this, he also shared the struggles of two students.

“One student told me that his parents work in a factory with very limited income and his family is poor, but his parents told him to study hard. I can imagine the efforts they made to ensure their child completes his higher education,”

“Another student is from Papar, Sabah. His father died a long time ago and his mother is a cleaner with an unimaginable salary. But, she never gave up and sent her son to study here, from Sabah,” Uncle Kentang explained.

With that, Uncle Kentang launched the Kind Heart Meals programme to ease the burdens of these students and their parents. He hopes that more universities and colleges will join and participate in his initiative.
