[TEST] M’sians Share The Best Lessons They’ve Learnt From Their House Moving Experience

COURTS Feat Image 1

Unless you’re a minimalist, moving house is hardly an easy task. From packing to transporting and unpacking, there are just too many things to consider and keep track of!

If you’re moving house for the first time, this article is for you! We’ve compiled some of the best lessons fellow Malaysians have learnt from their house moving experience. Keep on reading to find out what advice they’ve given!

1. “Declutter first, pack later.”

“Before you start packing, be sure to get rid of old or unused items first. If you do so, you’ll have less to pack, move, and unpack, which saves a lot of time and effort!” — Julia, 29

Decluttering is just as important as packing when it comes to house moving. You don’t wanna spend time and energy packing TONS of things, only to realize that you don’t need most of them at the end of the day! Here are just some items you need to declutter before moving:

  • Piles of papers: magazines, newspapers, flyers, posters, old calendars, receipts
  • Expired items: food, drinks, makeup or skincare products, medicine
  • Old or worn-out items: electronics, clothes, batteries, bedsheets, slippers

2. “Service all utilities and alarms at your new home before moving in.”

“Make sure that all utilities and safety alarms at your new house are functioning well before you move in. Don’t forget to take pictures of the utility meters, just in case there are billing mistakes!” — Lucas, 33

Basic utilities like electricity, water, Wi-Fi, and safety alarms are crucial in keeping our new homes comfortable and functional. Hence, it’s important to make sure that all utilities are functioning well before moving in.

3. “Turn off the main water valves and electrical power supply.”

“Turn off the water and electrical power supply before leaving your current house. This is to prevent unnoticed water leaks and opened electrical sockets, leading to wastage and extra bills.” — Farah, 27

Cutting off the water and electricity is just a prevention measure for unwanted utility bills. Once you’ve confirmed your move-out date, remember to call your utility providers to request service stops at your current home!

 4. “Always pack non-daily items first, and unpack daily items first.”

“Packing non-daily items first gives you the convenience of using your daily items until you’ve finished packing. Likewise, you’ll also need to unpack your daily items first so that you can take your time to unpack other non-daily items.” — Vicky, 30

The packing sequence matters too! Packing in the right order will prevent a lot of inconveniences, including missing essentials, disorganized items and more. Below are some examples of daily and non-daily items, just in case you overlooked them:

  • Daily items: skincare products, clothes, medications, sports equipment
  • Non-daily items: books, decorative items, stationeries, snacks

 5. “Prepare an inventory and label every storage box.”

“Having so many items to pack, it’s easy for us to lose track of our belongings. I find it useful to prepare a packing list and label every storage box, so that I know where each box belongs in my new home.” — Leon, 35

However, think twice before labelling valuables such as gadgets, expensive pieces of jewellery, and important documents, as it might lead to theft. Alternatively, you can label your storage boxes by colour coding them, so that you won’t expose the location of your valuables.

6. “Leave old home appliances and furniture behind.”

“It’s best to leave out old appliances and furniture when you move out. Not only are they challenging to move, but they’re also very high-maintenance!” — Katherine, 36

Bulky appliances and furniture can be very troublesome and expensive to move. It’s easy to bump them into door frames and walls along narrow hallways, causing damage or worse yet, injuries. If the appliances are old and faulty, expect to spend even more money on maintenance after you move into your new home!

Instead of moving and maintaining old appliances, investing in new appliances and furniture can be a better option financially, especially in the long run. This is especially true when you opt for quality appliances and furniture, which are efficient and require minimal maintenance!

So if you’re planning to move soon or in need of new furniture and appliances, but don’t know where to look, we have a fantastic suggestion for you!
