It’s no secret that Singaporeans prefer to spend their money in Malaysia as for them, our products and food are cheaper.

But this can often times also lead to Singaporeans proudly showing off their spending power here and becoming boastful.

The SG Kaki Nang TikTok page recently shared a video of a Singaporean man advising his fellow Singaporeans to tone down their boastfulness purely because they should feel lucky to have been born in Singapore where their currency is more powerful.

SG Kaki Ning wrote, “Singaporean uncle spitting facts.”

In the video, the Singaporean man shared his belief that it is important for Singaporeans to stop being ‘birds’ while spending their money in Malaysia, especially considering that the exchange rate has hit 3.50.

Sg 3

“When Singaporeans go to Malaysia to buy things, we don’t just quietly go there and buy, you know. All of us become birds. When Singaporeans go there, to JB or KL or Melaka to buy anything, because of the powerful Singaporean Dollar, things become so cheap.”

“So, we always say cheap, cheap, cheap, cheap, cheap, right? You become Jiao Lang, you know? We call it ‘birds’, ‘birdman’, okay? Can you all stop being ‘birdmen’? It’s not very nice. You got to be sensitive. When you go there and buy something, you don’t quietly buy and go away, you show everybody ‘wah, so cheap, you know so cheap‘, do you know how Malaysians feel?” he asked.

Sg 4

He also then pointed out that when many of these Singaporean ‘birdmen’ flock to Malaysian shops to show off their spending power, Malaysian stores would then purposefully raise their prices.

“Don’t flaunt your purchases, don’t flaunt your Singapore Dollars, don’t flaunt your meals. When you eat, walao, it’s like freaking 10 years never eat before. Order all the things and have so much wastage.”

He then decided to give his fellow Singaporeans somewhat of a reality check by telling them that they should be lucky to have that much spending power.

Sg 5

Sg 6

“Don’t think that you’re very capable, because you just won a lottery game, okay? Because simply, you’re born in the right country. That’s all, right? People are as good as us. (It’s) just that they were born in a different country. You just won a lucky lottery game.”

“Our GIC (Government of Singapore Investment Corporation) is very good, our government is very good, our institutions are very good. But you know, when we win the lottery game, please be humble about it. Please don’t have this mindset that because you’re spending money in Malaysia, you’re helping their economy. Let’s get it straight, you are helping yourself,” he shared.
