The Selangor State Health Director Datuk Dr Sha’ari Ngadiman has announced that the state has recorded a total of 31,822 dengue cases from January until 19 November 2022, which is a worrying upwards trend for the viral disease. In fact, Sha’ari elaborated that the number of cases recorded was a whopping 131.5 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

As reported by national news agency Bernama, Selangor recorded 13,745 cases during the same period in 2021, meaning that 18,077 more dengue cases were recorded this year. Sha’ari further elaborated:

“In the 46th epidemiology week from Nov 13 to 19, a total of 744 dengue cases have been reported in Selangor, which was a decrease of 8.4 per cent (68 cases) compared to 812 cases in the previous week,”

For illustration purposes

“Eight deaths were recorded due to dengue complications this year in Selangor, namely four cases from the Hulu Langat District Health Centre (PKD), two cases from Petaling PKD and one case each from Hulu Selangor PKD and Kuala Langat PKD,”

Moreover, the Selangor Health Director asserted that the four districts that recorded the highest number of dengue cases are as per below:

  • Petaling – 10,927 cases
  • Hulu Langat – 7,444 cases
  • Klang – 5,405 cases
  • Gombak – 4,308 cases

Please stay vigilant guys, especially if you’re living in the aforementioned districts. Among the things you can do to prevent getting and spreading dengue is to prevent Aedes mosquitoes from breeding. You can do so by collecting all unwanted containers that can hold water (such as cans and bottles) and dispose them in a way that they would not continue to collect water. Moreover, do change water and scrub the insides of flower vases once a week.

What do you guys think of this worrying statistic? Has there been a dengue outbreak in your neighbourhood? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
