In an interesting move to address China’s declining marriage rates, a popular nightclub in Shanghai has partnered with the Huangpu District Civil Affairs Bureau to offer official marriage registration services, right on the dance floor.

According to the South China Morning Post, INS Land nightclub, a hotspot among young locals since its launch in June 2023, will transform into a wedding venue on Friday and Saturday nights between 14-22 November. The initiative aims to make tying the knot more appealing by blending romance with nightlife culture.

Couples can book their ceremony through INS Land or government social media platforms, and will receive exclusive access to an indoor Tomorrowland music show. The experience includes custom performances and a co-branded marriage certificate.

China’s marriage crisis

The initiative comes amid a sharp drop in marriage registrations across China. In 2024, only 6.106 million couples registered their marriages, a 20.5% decrease from the previous year and the lowest figure since 1980.

Experts attribute the decline to rising economic pressures and shifting social attitudes, which have also contributed to broader demographic challenges like a shrinking population and falling birth rates.

In response, the government has rolled out various incentives to encourage marriage and family formation, including streamlined registration processes and financial support.
